Yoga Retreat in Jamaica

The info below is from an e-mail that one of my favorite yoga teachers, Michelle Barge sent to me so I thought I'd share it with all of you! Michelle is an amazingly energetic teacher. Even if you can't attend the retreat in Sunny Jamaica, you can catch one of her classes at East-West Yoga orExhale.

Dear Friends -

I am so pleased to announce that I've been asked to teach a retreat at Bromley Estate near the beautiful resort town of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.  As many of you know, I've lived my life going to Jamaica and know the island well.  The island of Jamaica is magical, spiritual and beautiful.  And, that this is also a Karma -- the act of selfless service regardless of reward -- retreat, makes it all the more special.  This 8-day escape provides an inspiring new type of retreat vacation that unites humanitarian work with the underlying mission of selfless service and Karma Yoga.  This special retreat offers yoga, adventure, cultural immersion, and the opportunity to transform the self in Jamaica.

So when you're not lounging around the pool, taking yoga, or exploring the area, we will partner with the Walkerswood Community Development Project focusing on their pre-school which needs school supplies, light repairs, activities with the children and perhaps showing them a downward dog or two.

For more information on the package, please go directly to this link:

I am partnering with one of the top retreat companies who specialize in the Caribbean making your sign-up process a one-stop shop and your experience seamless.  Many of you have asked for retreats and now I'm able to offer one.  I know November 8 is right around the corner, but seize the opportunity as it arises (as I did) and let me know if you'll be joining me.  Very limited  space -- only 12 spaces max.  Contact Michelle to reserve your slot

Health Workshop for Women in NYC

SPECIAL HEALTH AND HEALING WORKSHOP ... FOR WOMEN ONLY
... But Men Should Really, Really Listen!!

Women's bodies are unique. Women think differently from men. Women react differently and internalize feelings differently. These natural differences cause women's bodies to manifest "signs" of internal imbalances and stress in ways that are simply unique.

These signs are woven into and help create the story of your life. How you interpret them determines your risk of breast cancer, heart disease, uterine problems, stroke and many more health issues so common in women today.

If you're serious about preventing or healing disease and wish to learn how to rewrite the story of your own life to include abundant wellness, you won't want to miss this exceptional evening with Dr. Nan Lu that's all about you!

There is no such thing as disease or illness ... just Spirit's unresolved purpose. Are you listening?

The Red Tent Women's Project invites you to view an amazing new film. A
panel discussion will follow the film screening. Panelists include Jill
Benson, doula; Jennifer Block, author of "Pushed: The Painful Truth About
Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care", Karen Brody, playwright of "Birth",
and Dr. Charley Ferrer, the first Latina doctor of human sexuality in the
US.

Orgasmic Birth dismantles untruths about labor and birth that women have
been told for generations. This extraordinary documentary film challenges
cultural myths by revealing the emotional, spiritual, and physical heights
attainable through birth. Viewers witness the passion of birth as 11 women
have their babies in unhurried, nonmedicalized settings--including
hospital birth centers--where they feel supported and safe. Through
interviews with the couples and more than a dozen international experts in
birth, we come to understand that labor and birth were intended to be
enjoyed, not merely endured.

Women's health advocate and bestselling author Christiane Northrup, MD,
observes in the film that people have been "brainwashed" to view birth not
as a natural process but as "an emergency waiting to happen." Yet birth is
an everyday miracle that the body is well equipped to handle, given the
proper setting and caregivers and ample time.

The film demonstrates ways in which modern society, by subjecting healthy
women to the medicalization of birth, denies them a prime experience that
is their right. Among the dozen birth specialists interviewed in the film
are Sarah J Buckley, MD, author of Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering;
Elizabeth Davis, director of the National Midwifery Institute; Marsden
Wagner, MD, former director of Women's and Children's Health for the World
Health Organization; and other physicians, midwives, and experts in the
field.

The Red Tent Women's Project is a grassroots organization dedicated to
empowering and educating women and girls of all backgrounds.

6 Food Mistakes Parents Make

Last week the New York Times did a great article on the Six Food Mistakes Parents Make, along with suggestions on how to improve. I would like to add a seventh mistake that parents make, eating in front of the television, not at the family table. Studies have shown that people will eat many more calories when eating in front of the T.V.

Also, children won't pay as much attention to what the parents are eating, and discussion about how delicious the food is is unlikely to occur. This type of interaction can encourage kids to eat well. Not to mention the fact that without the TV in the way of conversation, eating at the family table serves as a place for the family to get to know each other better, each day, each meal.

Salute,
Juliette Aiyana, L.Ac. & Mom whose family eats at the family table.

NY Times on Acupuncture for Breast Cancer Patients

The New York Times Well Blog talks about the benefits of acupuncutre for women under going treatment for breast cancer. About 4 years ago I attended a continuing education seminar on the subject at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Hospital who has had acupuncturits working with cancer patients for many years. And it is commonly used in China as part of the health care regimen for cancer patients.
